The City had expanded so much by the 1890s that the need for a new public school in Ward 5 on Lower Tower Hill was evident. Like the recently built Rollins and Wetherbee Schools, the new building would be built in the massive style of brick, granite, and terra cotta. It was located on Ames Street between Olive and Byron Avenues. It was named after the Honorable Alexander B. Bruce, former mayor.
