The Lawrence, Mass., textile workers strike of 1912 began Jan. 12 and ended Mar. 14 of that year. Conducted by Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), it affected 27,000 workers in lost wages and caused considerable harm to the general business community, resulting, however, in an increase in wages which, in a broader perspective, also resulted in providing wage increases to other textile workers in New England. The strike became a milestone for labor history, the textile industry, immigration in the U.S., and the development of cities and towns in the northeast. During recent years the strike is remembered by the annual Bread & Roses Heritage Festival held in Lawrence on Labor Day.
