Nine state armories were constructed in Massachusetts under an act of the state legislature approved May 18, 1888. The site of the Lawrence armory on Amesbury Street, between Essex and Methuen streets, was selected Jan. 24, 1892 and the building completed in Feb., 1893. This was a large brick structure and was used to house local units of the state militia. It was initially occupied by Battery C of the First Battalion of Light Infantry, commanded by Capt. Wm. N. Steadman; the second floor housed the officers and company quarters of Company F, 9th Regiment, known as the Lawrence Light Infantry, commanded by Joseph H. Joubert; opposite were the rank and file and commissioned officers of Company I, 8th Regiment, led by Capt. James M. Forbes. Both regiments served in the Spanish American War. The building was demolished during urban renewal in the 1960s.
