The City of Lawrence used the James W. Sewall Company, Old Town, Me., to map the city in an aid to valuation for the Assessors' Office. Established in 1880, the company provided forest inventory, surveying and mapping services to the lumber industry in Maine and Canada and later in the 20th century, with formal training in civil engineering and expertise in urban water system development, the company brought new standards of accuracy, statistical analysis, and precision craftsmanship to the surveying, appraisal, and mapping through New England.
