Frederick Ayer and William Wood established the American Woolen Company at the end of the 19th century. At one time there were 60 mills in seven states producing 80 million yards of wool and worsted a year. The huge Wood Mill and the Ayer Mill were located in Lawrence. The Wood Mill was built in 1906, was in two sections half a mile long, and was the largest worsted mill in the world.
