In 1854 a few Presbyterian started meeting in a private home in Lawrence. Rev. Alexander McWilliam arrived from Boston to licentiate forty-six members on June 30 of that year. For two years congregants would meet in the Union School House on Jackson St. Rev. Samuel F. Thompson was the first pastor and during his tenure a church was built on Oak St. called First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. In 1862 meetings were suspended until 1868 when the congregation was reconstituted as The First United Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, Mass. In 1911 the congregation purchased the old First Methodist Episcopal Church on Haverhill St. In 1979 United Presbyterian Church, formed from the descendants of Scottish immigrants, merged with the Christ Presbyterian Church, originally begun by German immigrants, on East Haverhill St. and together they would continue under the name United Presbyterian Church.
