Fund created from the sale in 1852 of a large tract of land, owned by Judge Daniel Appleton White, in what is now Lawrence, Mass., the proceeds of which were to be targeted for educational purposes, including an annual series of lectures. Three trustees were appointed to oversee the gift and White Fund lectures commenced in 1864, continuing into the present time. The lot of land was also set aside for the building of a public library and in 1892 this happened. The cost of the building was given by Mrs. Nathaniel G. White and her daughter, no relation to Daniel Appleton White. The fund earned more monies than were needed for the lecture series and consequently the trustees were able to use the proceeds to aid the moral and intellectual life of the city, paying for housing and sanitary conditions and other civic improvements. In 1911 Rev. William Wolcott died leaving 17 paintings to the City of Lawrence by way of the White Fund.
