Robert M. Bailey was born in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania, June 15, 1822. He was the son of Col. Frederick and Polly (Witter) Bailey. He left Pennsylvania at the age of 19 with his brother to make his fortune in Derry, N.H. In 1852, he moved to Methuen, Mass., where he manufactured woolen goods. He had great success and at one time owned mills in Methuen and Lawrence and was the proprietor of the Belknap Woolen Mills in Laconia, N.H. He built and owned with Joseph Nickerson and Charles A. Lombard the Arlington Mills and successfully operated them during the Civil War. He was the president of the Hookset Mills in New Hampshire. In the 1840s and 50s he ran clothing dealerships in Lawrence. In 1855, his business was called J.W. Bailey & Co. and was located on Merchants' Row. He disposed of his interest in the Arlington Mills to Amos A. Lawrence in 1869 at which time he moved to Boston. He lived at 92 Waltham Street and worked entirely in cotton manufacturing. He was a resident of the town of Dedham, Mass., on Walnut Street for six years before he died. At the time of his death he was head of the commission house of R. M. Bailey & Co. He was a member of the Massachusetts Genealogical Society and the Suffolk Club. He was also a trustee of the Universalist Publishing House and president of Turner-Beard Brake Company. Mr. Bailey died in Boston on March 5, 1892.
