Summary
The Library received four filing cabinets filled with material that had been located in the City Engineer's Office for many decades. The archivist started and first sort, discarding ads, personal information, and duplicates of items the Library already had. The photographs were found here and there usually, though not always, with information about where and when they were taken. Many of the images are unlabeled. Designation of date and location as well as size and color of photo are in columns in the table that follows (see finding aid). One packet of photographs was in an envelope from C.S. Photo. It had the date March 13, [19?]91 on the outside with the subject 25 Marston St. This was the Plymouth Mills fire and the photos from 2- are with negatives are included. It has now become the Marston Medical Center. The photos are numbered 2-13 and 88-110, including the negatives. Numbers 14-21 had a triangular addition of paper off to one side as if the photos were early polaroids. Of particular interest are the images of reinstalling of the City Hall eagle. Images 35-78 are most likely from a severe flood that saw all the waterways (Spicket, Merrimack, and Shawsheen River) affected. The aerial views are likely to be the beginning of a project to make the Ferrous area on the north island (between Merrimack River and North Canal) into a park. This project is still active (2015). The black and white 5x7 #86 shows a group of people attending the signing of bill #914 "An act authorizing the Director of Personnel and Standardization to establish in-service training programs for engineering employees of cities and towns" [Massachusetts]. The people in the photograph are Frank S. Lagrotteria, Town Engr. Weymouth, Raymond O. Burlingham, Town Engr. Marblehead, past president, Senator Kevin Harrington, Henry F. Nilson, City Engr. Qunicy, past president, John McKinnon, Dir. Pub. Works, Clinton, president, Santo S. Nicolosi, City Engr., Lawrence, vice president, Re. Hilary J. Rockett, Marblehead. The designation president or vice president refers to the Massachusetts Municipal Engineers' Association
