Volume one has a hand-written title page "City of Lawrence July 17th 1883 Assessor Department". The pages are arranged by year and then letters of the alphabet starting with A. The columns include: Polls, Real Estate, Personal Value, Poll Tax, Real Tax, Personal Tax, and Total Tax. The archivist felt these referred to Poll Tax numbers, Real Estate value, Personal Property Tax, collected poll tax, collected real estate tax, collected personal tax, and the total. This is followed by two page summary, a non-resident summary, a valuation of all taxable property, total tax on all property and polls, yearly increase in valuation, city appropriations, state tax, county tax, total amount levied, ordered to raise, and overlaying sum. The letters perhaps referred to the last names of individuals that started with that letter. The columns were added and the totals were penned in red ink
