Football started as a Lawrence High School team in 1881; baseball ca. 1887; basketball in 1926. The football team won state titles in 1900, 1901, 1909, 1912, 1927, 1933, and 1934. In 1957 it became Class A champions and played in the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla., at the 23rd annual Kiwanis game against Miami Edison High School. There were also winning teams in 1958 and 1961. The first cheerleading squad started in 1946 and majorettes added in 1957 with drill squad in 1971. Over the years a variety of sports teams were added: girls bowling, indoor track, cross country, ice hockey, girls basketball, wrestling, soccer, girls field hockey, girls volley ball, tennis, girls track and softball, boys tennis, girls cross country, swimming, and volleyball. The original athletic teams were purely extracurricular activities. In 1924 physical education was required by state law and this coordinated with the new extension of the high school gymnasium and at this time physical education teachers were listed as faculty members. Athletic teams became part of the Athletic Dept. by 1944.
