There is an alphabetical index in the back of each. The chronology begins at the back of each vol. and the contents cover every aspect of what the department was involved with at the time. Letters came from contractors, other cities' engineering departments, the Essex Company, suppliers, laboratories, and various merchants. The last 3 vols. say "Letters received" on the spine
