Municipal Cemetery created in 1847 with the purchase of five acres on May Street and Old Road, during the year the town of Lawrence was incorporated. At the beginning family plots sold for $3. Additional acreage was added over the years and today Bellevue is made up of nearly 100 acres with a separate lot for veterans. The Den Rock property was purchased in 1877 for use as a municipal cemetery and despite the significant amount of planning undertaken for its creation, the cemetery never materialized. In 1847 the Rev. Charles D. French, the first resident priest in Lawrence, established Immaculate Conception Cemetery on Current Hill. The following year, the Rev. James O'Donnell, founder of the second Catholic parish in Lawrence, established St. Mary's Cemetery.
