Pemberton Mill, a cotton mill in Lawrence, Mass., was incorporated in 1853. In 1860 its structure collapsed, burying its workers. One of the rescuers broke a lantern and cotton ignited; those who had not been saved were lost to the flames. Eighty-eight people died and 116 were injured. Two years later the mill was rebuilt on the same location and continued to manufacture cotton goods until 1938. The archivist of Lawrence Public Library, Louise Sandberg, took on the task of commemorating the 150th anniversary of the fall of the Pemberton Mill (Jan. 10, 1860) by creating an exhibit that was on display at the Lawrence heritage State Park in March of 2010 and later in the 3rd floor lobby of Lawrence Public Library for the remainder of the year. Later the illustrator files were reformatted as jpgs and shown by way of flickr as a slide show (http://queencityma.wordpress.com/2009/10/22/the-pemberton-mill- disaster-lawrence-ma/).
