Summary
The first volume has a pasted note on the front board is a paper that reads: "Records of applications for state and military aid and the amount paid to indigent soldiers and sailors under Chapter 252 Acts 79". There are two loose auditor's reports for March and July, 1898. The first page gives citations to the legal citations. It also begins with minutes of meetings starting Jan. 20, 1888 and ending at p. 96 for Feb. 3, 1903. On p. 105 ledgers of disbursements starting with 1898 and proceeding to p. 144 with 1909. The second volume reads "Certificates" on the spine. The volume begins with a hand written (in black and red) index of individuals and their page numbers. All the remaining pages are forms filled out by a Paymaster. The title of the form is "Certificate of Reasons for Disbursing State and Military Aid". The form asks for Date, Name, Address, Age, Disability, amount deprived by disability, addiction to idleness, intemperate or vicious habits, resources, applied for US pension?, is relief temporary?, dependents, previous military aid, recommendations by municipal authorities and amount, and remarks. Other things were added to the form like being the widow of a serviceman, regiment in the services, and other comments. The first page begins in 1889 and the last one is p. 282 and dated Apr. 4, 1900. The forms were sent by the Massachusetts Surgeon General to each town. The third volume is a ledger. The top of the page left hand reads "Disbursements of State and Military Aid and Soldiers' Relief under chapter____Acts of 1909 Chapter ____revised laws by the City of Lawrence". The right hand page reads "State of Mass. Amount paid to each person and time when said was paid". The columns are name of volunteers, regiment and company, pension, Aid, relation to soldier, followed by the 12 months of the year. It runs from 1902-1911. The fourth volume is the same size and runs from 1911-1922
