Summary
The collection came to the Library in the first group of plans, rolled up. They are in container I. There were also three boxes of papers. These boxes included some plans that were folded. They were unfolded and divided into plans no larger than 36 inches and placed in container II. Larger plans were included in container III. I and II were housed in drawer I12 in the stacks. II are housed in A16. The reason is different sized map case drawers. The files in the first three boxes are prefaced by a number. This was on the original files and transferred to the new folders. Box four houses the larger projects. Box five which is letter size is organized by date and is seven which is legal size. Box six houses one public housing report. Box eight includes all the photographs (actually in miscellaneous box 16). Finally box nine houses a pile of reprints of articles in newspapers and magazines covering labor unrest in the early 1920s. The collection with the exception of box 9 covers work done by architectural jobs performed by the James Allen Company and later by Pearson, Alter & James. One of the larger projects was often called either United Fund or the Community Service Building. No location was given, but it was to serve as a location for the Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, MSPCC, United Fund, Catholic Charities, International Institute, Family Service, and Jewish Family Service. The location of this building is the Canal St. where Family Service is now located. It is surrounded by Pemberton Park. Two other large projects include the Arlington Trust Company in Methuen and the Central Fire Station in Lawrence. A number of projects originated from the City of Lawrence including school buildings, city hall, South Lawrence Public Library, swimming pools, Fire and Police Stations, Parker Manor, Bellevue Cemetery, City Yard, housing projects, and the senior center. Other projects in the collection include a number of residences, Katama Mills, Cold Spring Brewery, Messina Market, the Tuttle Company, a shopping plaza in Methuen, Burke Hospital, Gleason Building, Parkside Apartments, Kresge Building, the Vocational School, Lawrence Parking Corporation, the Pilot Building, Burger King, Lawrence Industrial Building, Atomic Subs, and Washington Heights Nursing Home. The Library gave the plans for the North Andover Bath House, The Town Yard, and Crane Hardware at 73 Main Street, North Andover to the North Andover Historical Society
