Summary
This is a collection of clippings or copies of clippings that document the Fire Department of Lawrence, Mass., from 1886 to 2006. The material includes information about firefighters, fires, fire stations, labor negotiations, a few photographs of damage from a 1984 fire (with letter from the Lawrence Arson squad), vehicles, alarm systems, water supply, and firefighting anecdotes. Significant fires that were covered: the Oxford Paper Mill (1973), Essex County Jail (Aug. 15, 1988), Calvary Baptist Church (Jan. 9, 1988), and the Ralph Pill Electric Supply Co. fire (Mar. 6, 1987). The most significant fire not covered was the Malden Mills fire of 1995. Occasionally clippings do not have dates on them. These were kept in the order they were received. A series of many suspicious fires starting in 1990 led to the arrest of Roland Turcotte in September of 1994. Over 200 buildings were set alight in an eighteen-month period in 1991-1992, many of them abandoned residences and industrial sites. Copies of the Lawrence Eagle Tribune from Aug. 9-11 [1984?] are in a separate portfolio. They are concerned with the Lawrence 1984 riots
