Summary
It's 1943 and the Japanese army, which controls the city of Shanghai as a whole, has established the only Jewish ghetto in the world that is not in the hands of the Nazis. Leon and Norah Blumenthal, a married Jewish couple who arrived in Shanghai in 1939, when the city was a free port and still retained all its fascination intact, are held in this 'determined area for stateless persons'.
