- Summary
- Single account book which was started Apr. 20, 1865 by city auditor, Elbridge B. Osgood. The book follows monies collected and dispersed. In 1867 the top of the pages reads: "Disabled soldiers, sailors, and the families of the slain", with Osgood listed as paymaster. He was followed by John E. Cushing in 1874 and by Richard J. Shea in 1888
- Biographical or historical data
- After the Civil War, a subcommittee of the Committee on Finance started distributing funds to disabled veterans and families of the dead. The original funds appeared to be from the general treasury by way of warrant. State aid was added to the funding in 1868 and payment to Civil War veterans and their families continued in this book until 1920. In 1917-1918 the sub committee also began to provide funds to veterans and their families of World War I.
