Summary
Manuel, un joven ecuatoriano que pinta acuarelas y vende hierbas medicinales en el mercado, emigra a Port Chester (Nueva York). Su esposa, Elvira, busca llegar a él por mar, pero su barco naufraga. Luego de su rescate, cambia de planes y viaja a Madrid. Antonio, el padre de los niños que ahora cuida, la descubre leyendo en secreto uno de sus libros. Le indica a hurtadillas un pasaje con una tira de papel, y Elvira, intrigada, señala a su vez una frase para él. Comienzan un intercambio de citas literarias por las que se cuela el amor. Mientras Manuel se refugia en sus pinturas y sanaciones naturistas al otro lado del mundo, Elvira cultiva una ilusión con Antonio. Luego de una decepción, busca retomar su hogar y viaja a Port Chester por su marido. Ante una tragedia inesperada, descubre las acuarelas que Manuel pintaba en su soledad.
