Summary
This collection is the compilation of Ms. Beland's years as White Fund and Lawrence Public Library trustee. It is solely concerned with her role as White Fund trustee. The original file names and order were kept. There is a letter and packet to Thomas F. Caffrey, also a trustee of the White Fund; the letter is from Ken Skulski and the Immigrant City Archives (now the Lawrence History Center). The packet includes: a 1999 report, written by Ken Skulski, to the White Fund concerning Rev. William E. Wolcott and his 1894 speech on public parks, copy of an Evening Tribune article dated Feb. 26, 1894, covering Wolcott's speech, and copies of handwritten manuscripts of Wolcott's. There is also a memo from Betty to Tom dated Sept. 8, 1999 including White Fund articles of incorporation, by-laws, waiver of notice of first incorporated meeting, first meeting of incorporation, minutes 5/26/82, and meeting of trustees 6/4/82. Also an amended copy (typescript) of the will, a copy of the handwritten copy of the will, multiple copies (typescript) of the will, and finally a list of assets from the Josephine G. Russell Trust on Dec. 31, 1969

Fund created from the sale in 1852 of a large tract of land, owned by Judge Daniel Appleton White, in what is now Lawrence, Mass., the proceeds of which were to be targeted for educational purposes, including an annual series of lectures. Three trustees were appointed to oversee the gift and White Fund lectures commenced in 1864, continuing into the present time. The lot of land was also set aside for the building of a public library and in 1892 this happened. The cost of the building was given by Mrs. Nathaniel G. White and her daughter, no relation to Daniel Appleton White. The fund earned more monies than were needed for the lecture series and consequently the trustees were able to use the proceeds to aid the moral and intellectual life of the city, paying for housing and improvement of sanitary conditions and other civic improvements. In 1911 Rev. William Wolcott died leaving seventeen paintings to the City of Lawrence by way of the White Fund. The paintings have been in storage at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In 2000 there was a move to sell the paintings to raise money for local art programs but the courts ruled that they could not be sold because of the nature of the bequest. In 2007 they were exhibited at the Addison Gallery of American Art. The fund still exists and is overseen by three trustees who are automatic trustees of the Lawrence Public Library as well. Elizabeth "Betty" Beland was a trustee of the Fund and compiler of the collection.
